Photog Retreat Nassau Snorkeling Shipwreck

A longer post detailing our time in The Bahamas for the Photog Retreat will come soon. For now, I just want to thank Kathryn Brown for having us speak at the first ever Photographers Retreat!!! We has a blast.

During the day in Nassau Bonny, Tracie, Vu, Shaun and I wanted to go out and do an excursion. We talked about going kayaking and all agreed that would be the best thing to do. Kayaking including snorkeling and was about $60 per person for a 2.5 hour excursion. Since Bonny and I have been on a couple cruises (Vu and Tracie had not been on any cruises yet) we felt that this was a great value. We went to book the kayaking excursion on the cruise ship the night before… unfortunately they had sold out!!! That really crushed us. We were looking forward to kayaking in The Bahamas.

So… what do you do in this situation? Well… we could just give up on our excursion and go on something that is also very fun… the official Photog Retreat bridal fashion photo shoot! (Now that I think about it, I do regret not spending more time at the photo shoot, it sounded like everyone had a great time.) One other thing we could do is try and find some local guy to just bring us out snorkeling…

The bad thing about not going with a cruise ship approved vendor is… worst case… you get robbed and killed or you get held for ransom… or… all kinds of bad things like getting left our in the ocean or getting just plain beat up for money. We thought it would be an adventure to just ask someone, so we did. We asked a worker at the port where we could go kayaking. She suggested going snorkeling instead and she ‘knew a guy’ that would only be $40 per person. It seemed pretty shady at the time but we were all for it. She had us wait for the Captain for 15 minutes and then brought us out to meet him.

Well, if you have watched the video already then you have already seen Captain Kendal and how awesome he is. He brought us out to a shipwreck that is far past where the ‘cruise ship approved’ snorkeling excursions were. On the way out there he pointed out a few of the spots that other snorkeling tours go to and there were hundreds of people there (and no cool shipwrecks). We passed Oprah’s house and Michael Jordans (according to Captain Kendal) to arrive at the shipwreck.

So, if you are in Nassau and have an itch for an adventure ask around for Captain Kendal and see if he will take you to the shipwreck (the tide will determine if he can get there) for some awesome snorkeling. I’ve been snorkeling in Hawaii and Cancun but this was by far the best.

Tech Note: This video was shot all on Bonny’s Pentax Optio W80 point and shoot underwater camera and edited in iMovie on a mac.

    That is wild :)

Also… if one of those fish rubbed up against me in the water I would kinda’ spazz out.

Dude they did more than just rub up against us… a few times they nibbled on our fingers because they mistook them for bread!

You would have REALLY freaked out if you saw how HUGE some of the fish were too!
